CHINATOWN in Semarang, Indonesia

Chinatown is always interesting part of the city with its own character and culture. The bussiness activity as you could see always busy. The width of the street stays as it was built in the past but their bussiness need more space to move. The street is easily blocked by the vehicles whenever they need to load or unload the stuff. It becomes a dayly view in Chinatown.

The Chinese style roof has a special design which is different from other design. Unfortunately many of the new buildings do not include this style anymore. Its a pity that they forget the valuable historical value.

The Ruined of Historical Building....

It is very sad that many of the old buildings in a very bad condition. It seems no body care about them. The damages slowly move from the bottom to the top. The trees grow on the walls, the leak on the roof getting bigger, the windows are stolen, the glass broken.....finally the wind and heavy rain knock it down....

I am so sorry my lovely building... Only God can save you....

HISTORICAL BUILDING IN SEMARANG

Some sketches I have made about historical buildings in Semarang will tell you how the city was really made with a good plan and design in the past.

Unfortunately not many of these building get its luck.
Some of them has been restored in the right way but many of them seem hopeless.
The material is getting older and older and weaker. You will see the damage in all of the part of the building.
From the bottom to the top....

If only we could hear what the buildings say...

its only two words...

SAVE ME.........

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

For sketching object, some times unfinished building has a better looking and more attractive... the bamboo, the fence and all the building material surround it. It has been about 6 months I stick with this project. Slowly but sure it will become a nice place to live in.

START FROM HOME....

This is the house we rent for a year, while our house in the city under construction. The location is about 30 minutes drive from downtown. I like the location because we have a village neighbourhood. You can see the bike in front of the house. I ride it around the neighbourhood in the morning for sketching . Actually this bike is for my daughter. But since I start enjoy sketching activity... I use it a lots... It save some energy...

VILLAGES VIEW

I have been living in east part of Semarang for about 8 months. Since our house in the city being renovated, we rent a small house near the village where people make terracota bricks.
It has been ages people do the job in a very traditional way. All are made by hand. However the bricks they make have been distributed all over the city for building construction.
Thatch roof shack is very familiar here. They burn the clay under this roof.

About me...Sketching

Since I found Urbansketcher's site. Suddently it remains me of my childhood, back in 1975. When I was about 7 years old, my brother took me on his bike sketching arround the city. Normally on Sunday or a public holiday. He was a highschool's student. I was so familiar with pencil colour and drafting pen.
Some drawing contest we joined and we won some prices. And we collect many trophies.

I thought my brother would go to architecture school because his architectural drawings are so wonderful. He finally continued his study in Civil Engineering School... I was a little bit upset because I did not see him again sketching.

Regarding his busy activity of studying, finally he took me to a private painting class. Some time we go outdoor sketching too. We visited old city, birdmarket etc. It was fun talking to people when sketching.

I also remember the time when I joined exchange students program in Australia. I used to do lots and lots of sketches.
